As the El Niño phenomenon stretches into 2016, we all face another scorching summer. But worry not: you don’t have to keep the A/C on full blast or buy another electric fan just to stay cool. Check out these simple and practical ways to beat the summer heat!
1. Switch out heavy curtains
Dense curtains make it harder for the summer breeze to enter your home. To improve airflow, replace your curtains with thin, light-colored ones instead.
2. Fire up the grill
Using the stove or oven raises the temperature inside your home, so fire up the grill and do your cooking outdoors. And since it’s summer, you can easily turn your barbecues into a backyard party. Just invite your friends over, stock up on grill-friendly food, and have fun!
3. Unplug electronics
Plugged appliances and electronics give off heat, which in turn make your home feel warmer. Unplug electronics when you’re not using them to lower both your home’s indoor temperature and your electric bill.
4. Use cotton bed sheets
Cotton is more breathable than polyester or satin, which helps keep temperatures cooler in bed. If the evening heat is keeping you awake, pop your sheets inside a Ziploc bag, put them in the freezer for an hour or so, then use them when you go to bed.
5. Sleep low
Hot air rises, so the higher up you are (i.e. on the second floor), the warmer you’ll feel. Consider moving to a downstairs bedroom, or redecorate your room in Japanese style and place your mattress on the floor.
6. Eat frozen treats
A simple and delicious way of keeping cool is to always have frozen treats ready to eat. To keep things healthy, chill fresh fruit instead of snacking on sugar-laden fare like ice cream or popsicles.
7. Spray yourself with cold water
Fill up a spray bottle with water and place it inside the fridge. You can use it to spray your face, neck, or wrists to get quick relief from the heat. It’s simple, effective, and doesn’t cost much. You can add a few drops of peppermint essential oil for extra freshness, too.
